What Is the Flu?
The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It attacks your nose, throat, and lungs and can range from mild to severe. Unlike a common cold, the flu tends to hit suddenly -- one day you feel fine, and the next you are wiped out with a high fever and body aches that make it hard to get out of bed.
Flu season in southern New Mexico typically runs from October through March, though cases can pop up year-round. The virus spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and you can catch it by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face. Getting treated early -- especially within the first 48 hours of symptoms -- can shorten your illness and help prevent complications like pneumonia or dehydration.
Common Flu Symptoms
The flu usually comes on fast. You may experience several of these symptoms at once:
- Fever (100.4°F or higher)
- Body aches and muscle pain
- Persistent dry or wet cough
- Extreme fatigue and weakness
- Chills and sweats
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
When to Visit Covenant Clinic
Most healthy adults can manage a mild case of the flu at home with rest and fluids. However, you should visit Covenant Clinic if you experience any of the following:
- High fever above 103°F that does not come down with over-the-counter medication
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain or pressure when breathing or coughing
- Signs of dehydration such as dizziness, dark urine, or not urinating for 8+ hours
- Symptoms that improve then return with a worse fever or cough (possible secondary infection)
- You are in a high-risk group: adults 65+, pregnant women, children under 5, or anyone with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease
Early treatment with antiviral medication works best when started within 48 hours of your first symptoms. Do not wait to see if it gets worse -- come in and let us help.
Severe difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion or altered consciousness, bluish lips or face, or inability to stay awake. These may be signs of a life-threatening complication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most people recover from the flu within 7 to 10 days. Symptoms usually peak between days 2 and 4. If you start antiviral medication like Tamiflu within the first 48 hours of symptoms, you may recover 1 to 2 days sooner. Fatigue and a lingering cough can sometimes stick around for up to two weeks after other symptoms have cleared.
Yes, the flu is very contagious. You can spread it to others starting about 1 day before your symptoms appear and up to 5 to 7 days after getting sick. Stay home from work or school until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication. Wash your hands frequently and cover your cough to help prevent spreading it to family members.
Go to the emergency room if you experience severe difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, confusion, inability to keep fluids down leading to severe dehydration, or if a child has bluish lips or face. Covenant Clinic can treat most flu cases, but we will refer you to the ER if your condition requires emergency intervention.
